Jim and Della were a young and loving couple. As Christmas was just around the corner, Della wanted to buy a Christmas present for Jim. But she only had a dollar and eighty cents. The only thing of value she had was her head of beautiful golden hair. So, she sold her long hair, and bought an exquisite watch chain to go with Jim’s magnificent golden watch.
When Jim got home and saw Della’s short hair, he was neither angry nor taken aback. He just kept staring at her short hair. Della nervously explained,“I sold my hair. Because Christmas is almost here, and I really wanted to get you a Christmas present.” Jim slowly pulled a present from his pocket and said gently, “I got you a Christmas present too. If you open it, you will understand why I was at a loss for words.”
Della opened Jim’s present, and found that it was a beautiful set of combs. But she no longer had her beautiful long hair. Della gave Jim the present she got for him. When Jim opened the present and saw the watch chain, he smiled and told Della, “Darling, let us put away our Christmas presents. They are the best presents ever, but we don’t need them now. I sold my watch to buy the combs.”
