During a dry season, Mother Goat took Baby Goat up a mountain to find fresh grass to eat. As she could not find fresh grass nearby, she took out a brass bell and hung it around Baby Goat’s neck and said, “Stay here. I will go look for green grass. If you are in danger, ring the bell and I will come to your rescue.”Then, Mother Goat went further up the mountain. But she had only walked a few steps when she heard the bell ring. She ran back immediately. Mother Goat asked, “What happened?”Baby Goat replied, “Mama, please get this fly off my nose!”Mother Goat said, “You should do such simple things on your own, instead of relying on me for everything.”

Mother Goat had just set off again when she heard the bell ring. Mother Goat ran back quickly. Baby Goat said, “Mama, a grain of sand has flown into my eye! It hurts!”Mother Goat said, “Just close your eyes, and the pain will go away soon.”Then, she set off again to find fresh grass.

Searching the mountain for grass made Mother Goat feel a little tired. So, she sat down under a tree to rest. Suddenly, she heard the bell ringing again. She thought, “This child is so dependent. As they say, ‘Everyone is the architect of his own fortune. Parents have to teach their children the value of independence.’I should teach him how to be independent too.”However, the ringing became increasingly frantic, and Mother Goat heard a wolf howling. So, she ran back immediately.

She saw a wolf who was just about to bite Baby Goat. So, she quickly chased the wolf away. She told Baby Goat, “You always trouble me for the slightest things. How shall I believe you if something really bad happens? Thank goodness I arrived in time to rescue you, or you would have been eaten by the wolf!”Baby Goat replied, “Mama, I will learn to resolve small problems myself and not to trouble you all the time.”

　　在乾旱的季節裡，有一隻山羊媽媽帶著小山羊，到山裡找青草吃，找來找去都沒發現青草地。她拿出一個銅鈴，掛在小山羊的脖子上，並說：「你留在這裡，媽媽去找青草地，如果你遇到危險，就搖動銅鈴，我會回來救你。」說完她就往山上走，可是才走幾步路，便聽到鈴聲，她趕緊跑回去。山羊媽媽問：「發生什麼事了？」小山羊說：「媽媽，你快將我鼻子上的蒼蠅趕走！」媽媽說：「這種事你要自己做，不要凡事都依賴媽媽。」
　　山羊媽媽才走一段路，又聽見鈴聲，她趕快跑回去，小山羊大叫：「媽媽，我眼睛裡有一粒沙，好痛啊！」媽媽說：「你把眼睛閉上，待會兒就好了。」說完就去找青草地。
　　山羊媽媽在山上四處尋找，她覺得有點累，就在樹下休息。忽然，她又聽到鈴聲，心想：「這小孩依賴性太重了，『兒孫自有兒孫福，莫與兒孫作馬牛』，應該要訓練他獨立，不管他了。」可是，鈴聲越來越急，還傳來狼叫聲，她急忙跑回去。
　　山羊媽媽看到一隻狼，正要咬小山羊，她趕緊將狼趕走。她對小山羊說：「你任何小事情都要依賴媽媽，真的發生事情，叫我怎麼相信你呢？還好，我及時趕到，不然，你就被狼吃掉了。」小山羊說：「下次小事情我不再依賴媽媽了，我要自己解決。」
