During the Warring States period, a man from the State of Yan heard that the people of Zhao walked very gracefully. So, he decided to go to Han Dan, the capital of Zhao, to learn how they walked.
Once he arrived in Han Dan, the man from Yan found that everyone walked gracefully, regardless of age or gender. It was indeed as he had heard. After admiring the people of Zhao for some time, the man from Yan spared no time, and began to imitate how they walked.
However, though the man from Yan tried very hard to observe and practice how the Zhao people walked, everyone in Zhao had a slightly different way of walking. This made the man from Yan very confused. In the end, not only did he not master the Zhao people’s graceful way of walking, he even forgot how he used to walk. When the time came for him to return to Yan, he no longer knew how to walk, and had to crawl all the way home.
